Statement
‘I was the dreamer, I the magician. How much, I see as I look back, I read into it all, reading my own dream text and not looking at the reality.’ (Murdoch, I. (1999). The sea, the sea. London: Penguin Random House, p.535)
This artwork is inspired by themes of power, illusion, self-delusion and fantasy explored through the central character of Iris Murdoch’s novel The Sea, the sea (1978). Constructed self-absorbed fantasies are presented to the reader in the form of a journal characterizing Charles Arrowby as a man bewitched and bewildered by his own powers of self-promotion and manipulation.
Adopting a surreal interpretation of the above themes the finished piece consists of four individually silkscreen printed layers using a gradation of blue acrylic tones printed on on 300g Somerset paper. In order to achieve the intense cyan hue, I created a series of proofs, which I used to document in detail the tone variation as each layer of ink was applied. Lastly a coat of semi matte acrylic varnish was applied to the complete image.
Bio
Eimearjean graduated in 2007 with a Masters in Fine Art Print from the University of the Arts London. In 2016 she completed a second Masters in Graphic Design specializing in publication design projects primarily informed by artists’ books and zine culture. Her practice incorporates processes such as silkscreen, etching, cyanotype, risograph, 3D printing, large format printing and illustration.
She has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and on an international scale in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Detroit, Berlin, London and Taiwan. Recent exhibitions include Summer Show, The Royal Hibernia Academy, Stampa Ora, Crawford Art Gallery, New Prints, The International Print Center New York, The Future Is Self Organized, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Tracing my Echo, Zweigstelle Gallery Berlin and Kaleid, The Art Academy London.
